Europe: DMA could soon include iPadOS, a new prospect to watch closely
Yesterday, the list of companies, applications and services subject to the new European Digital Regulation (DMA) was revealed. Apple, although in the fold of GAFAM, is not among the hardest hit. Indeed, Safari, the App Store and iOS are affected, but iPadOS, macOS, iMessage, Apple Music and Maps are, for the moment, spared from these new regulations. However, the European Commission is currently investigating whether iPadOS should also be included in the DMA.
Although the rules regarding DMA-eligible Gatekeepers are clear, there remains uncertainty about which services or applications are potentially affected. European commissioners will therefore need to take a closer look at raw iPadOS data, such as the number of users, market share and adoption rate, to decide the fate of this specific iPad OS in the face of the DMA regulation.
